Volkswagen's Latest Electric SUV and Golf EV Release

The Volkswagen brand is making preparations for the future of electric mobility by announcing the production of a new electric SUV at its main plant in Germany. Additionally, an electric version of the iconic Golf will be developed on the new SSP platform.

During a meeting with the supervisory board, Volkswagen informed them about its vehicle distribution plans through 2028. The company revealed that, apart from the ID.3, the main plant in Wolfsburg will introduce a second all-electric model. This will be a compact electric SUV produced in large numbers, with no further details provided except that it will be an A-segment SUV.

Volkswagen has been actively expanding its electric vehicle lineup, with the ID 2all electric hatch concept being introduced earlier this year. The company plans to launch 10 new Volkswagen EV models by 2026, including the ID.3, ID.Buzz, and ID.7 sedan. The next addition will be a compact electric SUV in 2026, possibly similar in size and style to the popular Tiguan.

During the meeting, Volkswagen also announced that the iconic Golf will transition into the electric era on the scalable systems platform (SSP) at the Wolfsburg plant. This decision eliminates the need for an additional plant in Wolfsburg.

In light of these developments, Volkswagen has decided to allocate the Trinity vehicle project, which has faced delays due to software issues, to its Zwickau plant. Reports have emerged about Volkswagen cutting production at two German plants, including Zwickau, due to low demand. The Zwickau plant will shut down one of its two ID.3 production lines and reduce its temporary workforce.

Volkswagen is feeling the urgency to keep up with competitors like Tesla and China's BYD, who are making strides in the electric vehicle market. The company aims to achieve a record profitability of 6.5% under the leadership of CEO Thomas Schafer, as it faces complex challenges and undergoes a transformation amidst difficult business conditions. BYD has even surpassed Volkswagen as the best-selling passenger car brand in China and has plans to expand its presence in Europe.
