VW ID.7 electric sedan starts manufacturing

Volkswagen has officially begun production of its ID.7 electric saloon in preparation for its launch in Europe later this year. The announcement was made in a social media post celebrating the "symbolic start of production" at the Emden plant in Germany. This follows a small production run that took place in June.

The CEO of Volkswagen passenger cars, Thomas Shafer, praised the team in Emden for their efforts in making the start of production a success. He described the ID.7 as a top car and expressed his gratitude to all the colleagues involved.

The ID.7, which was unveiled earlier this year, is positioned as a comfortable limousine for long-distance travel. It will introduce a new segment in the ID family and indirectly replace the Passat and Arteon models. The car is designed to offer long ranges, fast charging, a spacious interior, and intuitive operation.

As a competitor to the Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 6, the ID.7 will provide a range of up to 435 miles and support charging rates of up to 200kW. There will be two variants available: the entry-level ID.7 Pro model with a 77kWh battery offering up to 382 miles of range, and the Pro S derivative with an 82kWh battery for the headline 435-mile range. Both models will feature a rear-mounted 286hp single motor, which is the most powerful and highest-torque electric drive motor in a Volkswagen ID. model to date. A dual-motor four-wheel drive version will be released later.

The Emden plant will exclusively produce the ID.7 for the European and North American markets. The site has undergone significant investment of over one billion euros since 2019 to accommodate e-mobility production.

In addition to the ID.7, Volkswagen plans to launch 10 new electric models between 2023 and 2026. This includes the recently launched ID.3 and the long-wheelbase ID. Buzz. A compact electric SUV is scheduled for 2026, and the production version of the ID.2all, priced at less than €25k, will follow. Volkswagen aims to have the widest range of electric vehicles compared to its competitors and intends to achieve an 80% electric car share in Europe by 2030. The company also plans to produce only electric vehicles in Europe by 2033.
