Verdict: Zeekr is set to challenge Europe's premium car manufacturers with its new model, the Zeekr X. While the small Chinese SUV has its flaws, it offers a classy interior and unique design and technology features that make it stand out from its competitors. The flagship AWD powertrain may be overkill for most buyers, but the small price difference makes it tempting. Zeekr is a global luxury electric mobility brand owned by Geely, the Chinese conglomerate that also owns Lotus, Volvo, Polestar, and Smart. The Zeekr X is positioned as a compact electric luxury car and shares its platform with the Smart #1 and #3, as well as the Volvo EX30.

Zeekr, founded in 2021, already has three models on sale, including the Zeekr 001 'shooting brake' hatchback and the Zeekr X small SUV. Both models are expected to hit the UK market in the next few years. The Zeekr X offers good passenger space for its compact size, with room for four large adults and a 362-litre boot. It falls between supermini-sized SUV models and mid-size SUVs in terms of size. The Zeekr X comes in rear-wheel-drive, single-motor form or with dual motors and four-wheel drive. The dual-motor version boasts impressive power and acceleration, with a 0-62mph time of 5.6 seconds. The range for both versions is competitive, with the single-motor car offering 277 miles and the dual-motor model offering 264 miles on a full charge.

In terms of charging, the Zeekr X has a 22kW onboard AC charger and a 150kW DC rapid-charging capacity, allowing for quick charging times. The car also features a circular digital display on the external B-pillar panel, which shows the charging status at a glance. The Zeekr X has a bold and distinctive design, with unique styling elements such as sharp crease lines and distinctive headlights. The interior features a minimalist design with a centralised touchscreen for controlling various functions. The overall quality of the interior is good, although there are some lower-quality plastics and the vegan leather steering wheel may not be to everyone's taste.

The Zeekr X also offers some unique and novel features, such as a wireless phone-charging slot in the centre armrest and a built-in sunglasses holder. The car even has a pet mode, which allows owners to leave their pets in the car with the climate control set to keep them comfortable. The car also has external speakers that can play a selection of sounds and music to passers-by. While the touchscreen interface can be complex and not always responsive, it offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for easier connectivity. The Zeekr X offers a comfortable driving experience, with an upright driving position and plenty of headroom. However, the powerful dual-motor variant can easily break traction at the rear if driven aggressively.
