Zero DSR-X: Unleashing the Power of the Magic Carpet

Highway 142 in Washington offers breathtaking views of dramatic basalt cliffs, the Klickitat River, and Mount Hood. However, my attention is focused on the display of my electric motorcycle, showing 63 miles of range, and Google Maps, indicating 80 miles to the next charger. Can I make it? This is the dilemma I face while riding the Zero DSR-X, an electric adventure motorcycle that challenges the notion of EVs as "adventure" vehicles.

Zero is not the only company trying to bring EVs into the great outdoors. Rivian offers an electric pickup truck with a camp kitchen, Polaris sells an electric side-by-side vehicle for desert exploration, and Mercury offers an electric boat motor. These vehicles are not meant for commuting but rather for outdoor enthusiasts.

I felt well-prepared to test the DSR-X, as I own other adventure vehicles and have experience with power stations and boat batteries. The DSR-X has an angular and tough design, delivering an exhilarating ride with its 100 horsepower and 166 foot-pounds of torque. The electric motor provides a smooth and vibration-free experience, akin to riding a magic carpet.

However, the range of the DSR-X is a concern. While Zero advertises a city range of 180 miles, real-world conditions and highway speeds can significantly reduce that range. Charging the battery is also time-consuming, as it can take two-and-a-half hours to fill from empty on a level two charger.

Despite these limitations, I embarked on a trip to Klickitat County, Washington, with a full battery and the hope of finding charging options along the way. I carefully monitored my battery usage and made a stop in Hood River, Oregon, where I encountered a construction worker who was intrigued by the electric motorcycle. I continued my journey, pushing the limits of the battery and making it to my appointment with a 37% charge remaining.

On the return trip, I strategically conserved energy and coasted downhill to regenerate power. I successfully reached a charger with 13% battery left, feeling a sense of accomplishment and adventure. While the limited range and charging requirements of the DSR-X may not make it the ideal choice for long-distance expeditions, it offers a unique and thrilling experience for those willing to embrace the challenges of riding an electric motorcycle.

Ultimately, adventure on an electric motorcycle is defined by the constraints of civilization and the need for charging. It may not align with traditional notions of adventure, but it offers its own set of unexpected experiences and opportunities for exploration. Riding the DSR-X forces you to think differently and approach your journey with a sense of adaptability and creativity.
