The Mercedes-AMG GT is getting a major upgrade with its second-generation model, bringing it even closer to its rival, the iconic Porsche 911. The new design features active airflow elements, a rear spoiler, and the option for a fixed wing made from plastic or carbon fiber.

The overall look of the AMG GT has evolved from the original model, with a longer wheelbase and a front-end design that aligns with Mercedes' current styling direction. The rear boasts a gently sloping roofline and muscular rear wheel arches, giving it an aggressive appearance.

Sharing its platform with the AMG-developed SL, the new AMG GT now offers small rear seats, making it a 2+2 configuration. Mercedes hopes that this added practicality will give customers one less reason to choose the Porsche 911.

The AMG GT comes with a choice of twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engines, each paired with a nine-speed dual-clutch gearbox and four-wheel drive. The first version to be released is the AMG GT 63 4MATIC+ with 577bhp and 800Nm of torque, capable of reaching 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds. Following that is the AMG GT 53 4MATIC+ with 469bhp and 700Nm, completing the sprint in 3.9 seconds. Top speeds for the two models are 195mph and 183mph respectively.

Mercedes has equipped the AMG GT with advanced chassis technology, including rear-axle steering, adaptive dampers, an electronic limited-slip differential, and a semi-active hydraulics-based anti-roll bar system. The car also features a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 12.8-inch portrait-layout touchscreen infotainment system, and an AMG Performance steering wheel.

Final specifications and pricing details are yet to be announced by Mercedes, but it is expected that the new model will come with a higher price tag due to the brand's push upmarket and the increased flexibility offered by the new seating layout. The starting price is estimated to be around £125,000.

Unlike its predecessor, the new AMG GT will not have a Roadster variant, as that role will be filled by the SL. However, Mercedes is likely to produce a GT3 racing version and higher-performance roadgoing models, potentially including hybrid options with power figures exceeding 700bhp.

In conclusion, the second-generation Mercedes-AMG GT brings a host of improvements and upgrades, making it a formidable competitor to the Porsche 911. With its aerodynamic design, powerful engines, advanced chassis technology, and luxurious interior, the AMG GT is set to make a strong impression in the sports car market.
