2023 Range Rover Sport SE insights

The new-for-2023 Range Rover Sport maintains its role in the Range Rover lineup, offering a smaller, more affordable, and sportier alternative to the full-fat Range Rover. However, it is important to note that the Sport is not a corner-carving, track-capable SUV like the upcoming Range Rover Sport SV with its more powerful engine and aggressive suspension and brake package.

Instead, the Range Rover Sport focuses on on-road refinement and occasional off-road adventures. I had the opportunity to drive the base SE trim equipped with a 3.0-liter inline-six engine. With a price tag of $90,245 after options, it is significantly cheaper than the base Range Rover P400. But does it provide a true Range Rover experience?

Here are six thoughts on the Range Rover Sport SE:

1. The interior is truly gorgeous. The Range Rover Sport excels in minimalism and discrete luxury. The cabin features slab-sided paneling, artful control design, and a dashboard that exudes simplicity. The floating touchscreen is instantly responsive and serves as the control panel for the car. The Range Rover Sport avoids overwhelming flourishes and ostentatious displays of wealth, opting for a classy and timeless design.

2. The 3.0-liter inline-six engine is impressive. Producing 355 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque, this turbocharged mild-hybrid engine offers plenty of power. The smooth and quick eight-speed automatic transmission complements the engine's performance. Additionally, the inline-six engine is the base engine for the Range Rover Sport, making it a cost-effective option.

3. The infotainment system is no longer a weakness. Land Rover has addressed its historical Achilles' heel by introducing the Pivi Pro infotainment system. Paired with a 13.1-inch central screen and a 13.7-inch digital instrument cluster, the system is a delight to use. It seamlessly integrates with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, providing a highly competitive infotainment experience.

4. The Range Rover Sport is not as sporty to drive as its name suggests. While it offers a comfortable ride with its "dynamic" air suspension and adaptive dampers, the handling leaves much to be desired. The steering is slow, there is noticeable body roll, and the vehicle lacks the urge for spirited driving. However, Land Rover offers performance options such as rear-wheel steering and a 48-volt electronic active roll system to enhance the Sport's driving dynamics.

5. The design of the Range Rover Sport is captivating. The clean design, highlighted by features such as seamless body panels, flush door handles, and gorgeous taillights, embodies the timeless SUV character. It strikes a balance between a fresh, modern look and the model's heritage.

6. The Range Rover Sport retains its off-road capabilities. While I primarily drove the Sport on paved roads, it is equipped with features to handle off-road adventures. These include an air suspension for increased ground clearance, all-wheel drive, wade-sensing software, off-road cameras, an electronic active differential, and the latest "Terrain Response" system from Land Rover. The Sport also offers low-speed off-road cruise control for extended off-roading.

In conclusion, the new Range Rover Sport excels as an on-road luxury vehicle. It may not offer the dynamic performance of some competitors, but it stands out with its styling, luxurious interior, and the ability to tackle challenging terrains.
