2024 Ford Puma EV: Extended Range and Affordable Price

Ford of Europe is facing challenges in market share and profitability. However, the automaker plans to phase out all combustion-engined vehicles in Europe by the end of the decade as part of its transition to an EV-only lineup. The Puma subcompact crossover, manufactured in Romania, plays a crucial role in this transition.

The Puma was introduced in 2019 and shares its name with a previous coupe model. Designed by a team led by Thomas Morel, this B-segment crossover serves as a replacement for the Fiesta in Ford's European lineup. It offers a range of 1.0- and 1.5-liter turbocharged engines and is exclusively front-wheel drive. Ford plans to introduce an electric version of the Puma in 2024.

According to Auto Bild, a renowned German motoring publication, the Puma EV is expected to have a starting price of 36,000 euros, equivalent to $39,300. While this may seem expensive, it is comparable to other B-segment crossovers in the market. The Puma EV is estimated to have a driving range of approximately 400 kilometers, making it a competitive choice in its segment.

The Puma EV will be produced alongside the combustion-engined versions of the Puma. The combustion-engined Puma ST, for example, is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine that delivers 197 horsepower. Ford has adapted the Global B-car vehicle architecture for the Puma EV, which is also used in other Ford models like the Transit Courier and Tourneo Courier.

In May 2023, Ford introduced the E-Tourneo Courier, an electric version of the Tourneo Courier van. The E-Tourneo Courier is capable of adding 87 kilometers of driving range in just 10 minutes of DC fast charging. It can reach 10 to 80 percent charge in under 35 minutes and takes 5.7 hours for a full charge using an overnight AC charge.

Based on the press release for the E-Tourneo Courier, it is expected that the Puma EV will be launched by 2024. Like the E-Tourneo Courier, the Puma EV is likely to feature a one-pedal driving mode. However, Ford has not yet confirmed the battery capacity and WLTP combined range for either van.
