Volkswagen is set to release a facelifted eighth-generation model of the Golf next year to celebrate its 50th anniversary. CEO Thomas Schäfer has hinted that this could be the last combustion-engined version of the popular hatchback. The new model will feature updated styling, revised hybrid powertrains, and an improved cabin with larger displays and upgraded digital functions. It is scheduled to launch in the UK in the second half of next year.

This extended model cycle forms part of Volkswagen's strategy to transition to an all-electric European lineup by 2033. The company plans to offer the new Golf exclusively with a dual-clutch automatic gearbox in certain models to reduce CO2 emissions. The 2024-model-year Golf will adopt VW's new MQB Evo platform, which includes a revised structure with stiffened mountings for the rear axle to improve rigidity.

Volkswagen has focused on enhancing the Golf's plug-in hybrid powertrains. The eHybrid and GTE models will feature the EA211 Evo turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine, resulting in increased power. The eHybrid will have a claimed 212bhp, while the GTE will have 256bhp. Both models are expected to have a WLTP electric range of over 62 miles due to a larger-capacity battery.

The new Golf will also come with advanced technology upgrades. VW's R&D center in Braunschweig is working on accelerating the start-up process of the infotainment system. The original Qualcomm chipset will be replaced with a more advanced Samsung unit in late 2021. Additionally, the facelifted Golf will feature an updated Park Assistant with automated functionality, allowing the car to be parked remotely via a smartphone. The Trained Park Assist function will enable the Golf to autonomously park itself in parking spaces up to 50 meters in length.
