Autumn slowdown impacts CV production
【Summary】UK CV production down 5.2% in September, but year-to-date production rises 11.4%. Domestic orders increase while exports fall. Demand from UK and EU drives production, but tougher Rules of Origin pose a risk of punitive tariffs. Urgent resolution needed to avoid competitiveness challenges and increased costs.
According to figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), UK commercial vehicle (CV) production experienced a 5.2% decline in September. A total of 11,352 vans, buses, trucks, coaches, and taxis were produced, with the decrease attributed to a strong September last year, which was the best since 2011.
Despite the decline in September, year-to-date UK CV production remains positive, with a rise of 11.4% to 85,540 units. This represents a significant increase of 61.1% compared to the same period in 2019, making it the best first nine months since 2011.
The increase in production was primarily driven by domestic orders, which saw a rise of 10.3% to 5,124 units. On the other hand, exports experienced a decline of 15.1% to 6,228 units.
SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes commented on the situation, stating that despite the fall in September, UK CV production is showing a strong recovery following the challenges posed by the pandemic and subsequent supply shortages. He highlighted the robust demand from both the UK and overseas markets, particularly the EU, as a driving force behind the production growth. Additionally, Hawes mentioned that the output is increasingly being electrified.
However, Hawes also expressed concerns about the potential impact of tougher Rules of Origin coming into effect in January. He warned that if a resolution is not reached, both the UK and EU CV industries could face severe competitiveness challenges, and consumers may experience increased costs. Urgency and a sensible resolution are needed to address this clear and present danger.
