BMW has announced the pricing and specifications for its highly anticipated electric vehicle, the BMW i5. With 593bhp and a range of up to 321 miles, the i5 is ready to compete with rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz EQE, Tesla Model S, and upcoming Audi A6 E-tron saloon.
Joining BMW's expanding range of electric vehicles, including the iX1, i4, and i7, the i5 will be available in the UK starting at £71,105.
The BMW i5 range begins with the rear-wheel-drive eDrive40, equipped with a rear-mounted electric motor producing 335bhp and 317lb ft of torque. It can accelerate from 0-62mph in 6.0 seconds and has a top speed of 120mph.
At the top of the range is the four-wheel-drive BMW i5 M60 xDrive, priced from £97,745. It combines the rear-mounted electric motor with a smaller front-mounted motor, adding 256bhp and 269lb ft of torque. The combined system output is 593bhp and 605lb ft, allowing the M60 xDrive to go from 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 143mph.
Meanwhile, the regular BMW 5 Series, priced from £51,000, will be available with hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
In addition to the i5 sedan, BMW plans to introduce the highly anticipated i5 Touring, one of the first executive all-electric estates on the market. With two power levels to choose from, BMW hopes the electric powertrain will attract new customers and boost sales of its best-selling model.
Both i5 models come with an 81.2kWh lithium-ion battery as standard. The eDrive40 offers a claimed range of 296 to 362 miles, while the more powerful M60 xDrive has a claimed range of 283 to 321 miles.
Standard charging capabilities for both models include 11kW AC charging, which can be upgraded to 22kW with an optional on-board charger. The maximum DC charging capability is 205kW, allowing for a 10-80% charge in just 30 minutes, according to BMW.
