BMW unveils an armored electric vehicle for the Prime Minister

The BMW i7 Protection is an armoured version of the fully electric sedan flagship, designed for dignitaries, presidents, and ministers who require both protection and luxury. It offers bullet and bomb-proof resilience, making it an ideal choice for high-level security. While it has been unveiled internationally, it is uncertain whether it will be included in the local Government fleet.

New Zealand already has an armoured vehicle in its Crown fleet, a petrol V12 that was purchased over two decades ago. The armoured i7 features bullet-proof glass, protection-spec doors, and armoured steel construction. It is primarily used when New Zealand hosts international high-ups who require high-level security.

The Crown's current VIP cars are due for renewal, and the procurement process is overseen by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). Previous government BMW fleet contracts have favored runout versions of luxury limousines, but the government's policy now leans towards electric vehicles.

BMW New Zealand has not confirmed whether the i7 Protection is being evaluated by the government. The car is the first armoured electric sedan offered by a car manufacturer and is an alternative to a petrol model created to the same protective specifications. Both models are certified to VR9 protection standards, providing security against gunfire and explosive devices.

The vehicles have a discreet appearance and are similar to regular variants. They feature a newly engineered Protection Core, with the entire supporting structure built from armoured steel to form a self-supporting protective cell. Additional features include protection-spec doors, armoured underbody and roof, safety glass, and protection against explosives and drone attacks.

The i7 Protection is equipped with specially developed run-flat tires, allowing the vehicle to continue driving even when fully deflated. Custom options are available, such as a fresh-air supply system, fire extinguishing system, flashing lights, radio transceivers, and flag poles.

The weights of the vehicles have not been disclosed, but upgrades may add up to a tonne to the standard weight of the i7. The performance of the i7 Protection is slightly dulled due to the added weight, with a 0-100kmh time of nine seconds.

BMW offers specialized driver training courses for chauffeurs and a global network of experts who provide service and support specific to the Protection vehicles.
