Book reading on the highway with new semi-autonomous tech

Home > Industry Analysis > Content

【Summary】Polestar 4 will introduce Mobileye Chauffeur, a partially autonomous tech allowing drivers to take their eyes off the road on highways. The system offers an "eyes-off, point-to-point" autonomous driving experience on highways and an "eyes-on automated driving" experience on other roads. While this puts Polestar ahead of most competitors, Mercedes is also introducing a Level 3 autonomous system that allows drivers to read or play games under certain driving scenarios.

The Polestar 4 is set to revolutionize the automotive industry with its advanced technology. As a relatively small company, Polestar aims to establish itself as a leader in autonomous driving technology. Its latest endeavor involves partnering with Mobileye to introduce the "Chauffeur" partially autonomous driving system.

While the exact release date for Chauffeur has not been disclosed, Polestar confidently states that it will debut with the Polestar 4. Although the vehicle is already available for purchase in China, the technology will not be integrated directly from the factory. Instead, the Polestar 4 will come equipped with Chauffeur capability through Mobileye's SuperVision-based ADAS system.

Chauffeur is designed to provide an "eyes-off, point-to-point" autonomous driving experience on highways. On other roads, it offers an "eyes-on automated driving" experience. This places Polestar ahead of most competitors, as the majority of ADAS systems currently on the market are only Level 2 or 2+, requiring drivers to keep their eyes on the road at all times.

However, Mercedes is also making strides in autonomous driving technology with its Level 3 system called DrivePilot. Similar to Chauffeur, DrivePilot allows drivers to take their eyes off the road on certain highways. Although it does not permit drivers to fall asleep, they can engage in activities like reading or playing games on the infotainment system in specific driving scenarios.

Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar, expressed excitement about the collaboration with Mobileye, stating that it will significantly enhance the innovation in the Polestar 4. He believes that autonomous driving technology will make future journeys more enjoyable for customers, allowing them to enable autonomous driving when desired.

The first deliveries of the Polestar 4 are expected to commence in China before the end of 2023, with global sales and deliveries starting next year.
