If you're in the market for a car with a luxurious interior reminiscent of a boutique hotel, the DS 7 might be the perfect choice. This large sports utility vehicle offers a unique aesthetic compared to its German rivals, such as the Audi Q3, by emphasizing its French design. The interior fixtures and fittings showcase diamond patterns, which can be found in various elements, including switches and the digital instrument display.

Opinions on the DS 7's design may vary depending on personal taste. For instance, the dashboard clock spins into view when the starter button is pressed, featuring Art Deco-style graphics that contrast with the surrounding Modernist fixtures and fittings.

The DS 7, previously known as the DS7 Crossback, has been on the market for the past six years. The new model features a restyled front end with a larger grill, slimmer headlamps, and vertical sidelights resembling claw marks. The lamp clusters at the rear of the vehicle have also been slimmed down, and changes to the DS 7's brightwork indicate a refreshed appearance.

Inside, there are design tweaks as well. The dash features a large touchscreen with user-friendly widgets, although the abundance of functions may be overwhelming, as is typical with modern high-end cars.

When it comes to power options, the DS 7 offers 1.5-liter diesel versions and plug-in hybrids that utilize 1.6 petrol engines. The hybrids come with either one or two electric motors, depending on whether they have four-wheel drive or not. Unfortunately, there is no petrol-only version available.

During our test drive, we experienced the Opera E-TENSE 4x4 300, one of the five different trim levels available. This particular model uses electric motors to enhance performance and seamlessly transition between petrol and battery power. The car can also be driven in electric-only mode, with a claimed range of approximately 43 miles. However, in our experience, the battery depleted in about half that distance.

Charging the car can be done while driving or by plugging it into a 7kw EV charger, which takes about two hours for a full charge. Alternatively, a domestic socket trickle charge will take approximately six and a half hours.

There are a couple of criticisms to note. The front doors lack electric window switches, which are instead located on the outer edges of the center console. Similarly, the parking brake switch is positioned in the same area, leading to an unintended halt when mistakenly pulled instead of the driver's window switch.

The DS 7 is not a sporty car, but it still offers impressive acceleration, reaching 60 mph in just 5.9 seconds and achieving a top speed of 146 mph. While some of its rivals may have a harsh ride due to low-profile tires and stiff springing, the DS 7's suspension, which has three settings, strikes a balance between firmness and comfort. On 4x4 versions, the suspension is controlled by a computer with a camera that scans the road surface for imperfections, adjusting the ride stiffness accordingly.

Despite its size, the DS 7 handles bends with precision and features nimble, rapid steering. Mechanical refinement is also excellent, with the car being virtually silent in electric mode and the four-cylinder 1.6 petrol engine producing minimal noise. The DS 7 offers a serene driving experience, especially on motorways, although some wind buffeting may be noticeable.

The upgraded headlamp cluster effectively illuminates country lanes with a broad spread of white light. As an expensive car, the DS 7 is packed with features, including rear seats with electric reclining functions and a comprehensive suite of safety and driver aids. Some functions, such as setting the interior temperature and controlling the plug-in charging system, can even be managed remotely through a smartphone.

All in all, the DS 7 is a thoroughly enjoyable car with ample space for passengers and their belongings. It offers a pleasant driving experience and is equipped with safety and convenience features. Although it may not have the same brand recognition as BMW and Mercedes, the DS 7's niche appeal makes it a unique choice for discerning buyers.
