Bromley's Innovative Solution for Charging Residents without Driveways
【Summary】Bromley is deploying the Gul-e charging solution to allow residents without driveways to charge their electric vehicles at home. The solution involves a secure cable gully fitted into the pavement, eliminating trip hazards for pedestrians. This initiative aims to encourage more people to switch to electric vehicles by providing them with cheaper home charging options.
Bromley is introducing a new charging solution to provide home charging options for residents who do not have driveways. The London borough is currently testing the Gul-e solution, which was developed by Oxford City Council. This innovative solution involves a secure cable gully that is fitted into the pavement, allowing for EV charging while minimizing the risk of pedestrians tripping. By utilizing this solution, drivers can take advantage of the cost savings associated with home charging, as opposed to using public charging devices. This initiative aims to encourage more people to switch to electric vehicles.
Bromley is joining other local authorities in trialing the Gul-e solution. This solution helps councils achieve their local EV strategies, contribute to transport decarbonization efforts, and work towards net zero policy targets. Additionally, implementing this solution can reduce the need for significant investments in on-street infrastructure, subsequent maintenance, and contract management.
The Gul-e solution has already undergone successful trials with councils in Oxfordshire and Bedfordshire. Jason Munro, the director of operations at ODS, expressed excitement about bringing Gul-e to the capital and supporting the London Borough of Bromley in this new venture. ODS aims to contribute to the growth of EVs in the UK and assist local authorities nationwide with their EV strategies by offering Gul-e's safe, convenient, and competitively-priced at-home charging.
Councillor Nicholas Bennett, the executive councillor for transport, highways, and road safety, emphasized the importance of evaluating the impact of this new charging solution on the effectiveness and convenience of home charging for electric vehicles. The council hopes that many households in the borough will be interested in using this system to charge their cars, envisioning a future that is safe, practical, and quiet.
