BYD's New Vehicle Carrier to Transport 7,000 EVs in a Single Trip

BYD, a rapidly growing car company, is making a name for itself in the world of new energy vehicles (NEVs) and is giving Tesla a run for its money in the race to become the largest EV maker globally.

In order to support its expansion, the company has proposed the idea of having its own car carrier ships to target global export markets. Construction has now commenced on the first of these carrier ships, which will have the capacity to transport up to 7,000 vehicles per voyage.

According to a report by cnevpost, the initial ship, being built by Guangzhou Shipyard International, will measure 200 meters in length and have a maximum speed of 18 knots or 34 km/h. The ships will be powered by LNG, but will also incorporate a battery and energy reduction devices.

Last year, it was reported that BYD planned to order a total of 8 car-carrier ships, with an estimated cost of $686 million USD or approximately $1.07 billion AUD.

In Australia, BYD has successfully delivered 11,831 electric vehicles to local roads, with the majority being the highly popular BYD Atto 3 SUV. Deliveries of the more affordable BYD Dolphin began in October, and the company aims to ship even more cars to the country in the final two months of the year.

In addition to this, BYD recently introduced the Seal, a performance-oriented sedan, at a surprisingly competitive price point. Looking ahead to 2024, BYD has plans to launch two more models in the Australian market, including a ute in the second half of the year.
