Calculate the alternative: Ulez payment or new vehicle?
【Summary】Londoners are considering selling their cars to avoid paying the new Ulez charge. A calculator has been created to help determine if it's more cost-effective to pay the charge or buy a new car.
Sadiq Khan's Ulez scheme has recently been expanded to cover the entire area within the boundaries of the M25, going beyond just inner London.
Under this scheme, cars that do not meet the emissions requirements will be subject to a daily charge of £12.50 if they drive within the designated zone.
A recent study conducted by used car platform Motorway has revealed that approximately one in five Londoners are planning to sell their cars in order to avoid paying these charges.
For those considering whether or not to sell their cars and upgrade to a vehicle that is exempt from emissions penalties, the key factor to consider is whether they drive enough to make the investment worthwhile.
For example, a driver who commutes through the Ulez every day in an old diesel car for the school run would end up paying £62.50 per week, resulting in an annual cost of £2,000 (assuming a standard 39-week school year).
However, the question remains: How long would it take to recoup the investment through savings on Ulez fines after purchasing a newer car, let's say for £10,000?
To help answer this question, The Telegraph has created a calculator that allows you to input the model of your current car, the desired selling price, the cost of the new car you intend to buy, and how frequently you drive your car into the Ulez zone on a daily basis.
