The Ministry of Defence has announced the launch of the first of three hydrogen-fuelled charging facilities by the Defence Support organisation. These facilities will power Front-Line Command electric fleet vehicles and the programme will begin with trials at RAF Leeming, Her Majesty's Naval Base DEVONPORT, and Merville Barracks in Colchester.

This project is a significant step towards achieving a zero-emission fleet by the end of December 2027. Hydrogen is being used as an energy source, showcasing the potential of new technology and providing operational advantages.

The trial is part of the Sustainable Road Transport programme, which focuses on the use of hydrogen as a fuel. The Defence Support organisation will explore further options for electric vehicles and fully hydrogen-powered vehicles.

Air Vice Marshall Richard Hill, Director Defence Support Major Programmes, highlighted the importance of this trial in understanding hydrogen's role in the future energy mix of Defence. He emphasized the significance of using hydrogen to power electric vehicles in accessing sustainable energy sources and ensuring resilience and mobility in off-grid and compromised-supply locations.

The Defence Support organisation, as part of Strategic Command, is dedicated to delivering the necessary energy infrastructure for Defence. RAF Leeming Station Commander, Group Captain Gareth Prendergast, expressed enthusiasm for the Defence Support programme's exploration of hydrogen and its potential to enhance Defence capabilities. He mentioned the GeoPura system's ability to increase resiliency on bases and influence operations both at home and overseas.
