DS 3 E-Tense: The Power of Going Electric for the Smallest DS
【Summary】The DS 3 E-Tense is a fully electric vehicle that offers improved battery, increased range, and greater efficiency. Its stylish design and luxurious interior make it stand out. The car has a range of 250 miles and a maximum charging rate of 100kW. While it may not provide an exhilarating driving experience, it offers comfort and grip. The price starts at £37,000 for the electric version, but can go up to over £40,000 for the top trim.
I had always admired the original DS 3 for its peppy and responsive performance, which made it a credible rival to the BMW Mini. However, the latest DS 3, now called the DS 3 E-Tense, is a completely different proposition. It has a higher stance, a larger size, and is only available as a five-door model. It is also very style-focused, with elegant design elements such as flush-fitting door handles and stylish LED lights.
The DS 3 E-Tense is also available as a fully electric vehicle, and it has undergone a recent facelift that brings significant improvements. The battery has been upgraded, resulting in increased range and greater efficiency. While the styling may not appeal to everyone, in the right color, the DS 3 E-Tense exudes elegance and sophistication.
Inside the DS 3 E-Tense, the design is a feast for the eyes. It strikes a balance between being unique and functional, with a tessellating diamond effect throughout the dashboard and exquisite materials. DS has a knack for making mainstream cars feel premium, and the DS 3 E-Tense is no exception. The 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system is a significant improvement, although some everyday controls are still buried in touch-screen menus.
The driver's display is superb, the seats are sumptuous, and the metallic switches on either side of the gear selector add a touch of luxury. In the rear, there is plenty of space, but the unusual door pillars limit natural light and affect visibility. However, top-spec cars come with parking cameras and rear parking sensors to mitigate this issue. The boot space is a bit tight for an SUV, and there is a noticeable lip at the entrance.
Under the hood, the DS 3 E-Tense offers a handful of petrol engines, but the electric drivetrain is particularly suited to the car's majestic cabin. With an official range of 250 miles (real-world range closer to 200 miles) and a maximum charging rate of 100kW, the electric version provides a punchy performance with the equivalent of 155bhp and 192lb ft. It accelerates from 0-62mph in nine seconds, offering a decent driving experience.
While the DS 3 E-Tense may not provide thrilling performance in the bends, its suspension strikes a balance between firmness and comfort. The car feels comfortable over most surfaces and offers ample grip. However, it is important to note that the DS line-up, including the DS 3 E-Tense, is positioned as a premium product, which is reflected in its price. The base model starts at just over £25,000, while the fully equipped Opera trim can exceed £40,000.
The Opera trim offers a range of luxurious features, including full driver assist, a head-up display, a "watch strap" leather interior, wireless phone mirroring, and wireless charging. While there are other options in the market, such as the Tesla Model 3 and the Kia Niro, the DS 3 E-Tense's unique combination of luxury and electric powertrain appeals to DS fans who appreciate its calm and plush demeanor.
Overall, the DS 3 E-Tense impresses with its substantial and luxurious feel, making it stand out among cars of its size. After spending a week driving it, I was genuinely captivated by its charm.
