DS 7 SUV receives a mid-life refresh

If you're in search of a car with the luxurious feel of a boutique hotel, the DS 7 might be the perfect choice. Unlike its German rivals, such as the Audi Q3, the DS 7 focuses on offering a unique French aesthetic. The interior fixtures and fittings reflect this, with diamond patterns incorporated into various elements, including switches and the digital instrument display.

Opinions on the DS 7's design vary depending on personal taste. For example, the dashboard clock spins into view when the starter button is pressed, featuring Art Deco-style graphics that contrast with the surrounding Modernist fixtures.

The DS 7, previously known as the DS 7 Crossback, has been on the market for the past six years. The new model features a restyled front end with a larger grill, slimmer headlamps, and vertical sidelights resembling claw marks. The lamp clusters at the rear have also been slimmed down, and changes to the car's brightwork give it a refreshed look.

Inside, there are design tweaks as well. The dashboard includes a large touch screen that is fairly straightforward to navigate, although the sheer quantity of functions can be overwhelming, as is common with modern high-end cars.

The DS 7 offers various power options, including 1.5-liter diesel versions and plug-in hybrids with 1.6-liter petrol engines. The hybrids are equipped with one or two electric motors, depending on whether they have four-wheel drive. Unfortunately, there is no petrol-only version available.

We had the opportunity to drive an Opera E-TENSE 4x4 300, one of the five different trim levels offered. This model utilizes electric motors to boost performance and switch between petrol and battery power. The car can also be driven in electric-only mode, with a claimed range of around 43 miles. However, during our test, the battery depleted in about half that distance.

Charging options include the ability to charge the car while driving or using a 7kw EV charger, which takes approximately two hours for a full charge. A domestic socket trickle charge takes about six and a half hours.

There are a few criticisms of the DS 7. The front doors lack electric window switches, which are instead located on the outer edges of the center console. The parking brake switch is also in the same area, leading to accidental activation. Additionally, the brakes initially feel spongy and require a firm push to engage, resulting in a sometimes abrupt stop.

Despite its size, the DS 7 offers nimble and precise steering, making it surprisingly agile around bends. The suspension, with three settings, is firm yet comfortable, especially on 4x4 versions equipped with a computer-controlled system that adjusts ride stiffness based on road imperfections.

The DS 7 provides a quiet and refined driving experience. In electric mode, the car is virtually silent, and the four-cylinder 1.6 petrol engine remains unobtrusive. The upgraded headlamp cluster illuminates the road with a broad spread of white light, enhancing visibility on country lanes.

Packed with features, the DS 7 is an expensive car that offers rear seats with electric reclining functions and a range of safety and driver aids. Some functions, such as controlling the interior temperature and managing the plug-in charging system, can be controlled remotely via phone. With its spacious interior and abundance of equipment, the DS 7 is a pleasant and convenient choice. While it may lack the brand recognition of BMW and Mercedes, its niche appeal makes it a unique option for buyers seeking something different.
