DS 7 SUV receives an updated look

If you're in search of a car with a boutique hotel-like interior, the DS 7 might be the perfect choice. Unlike its German rivals, such as the Audi Q3, the DS 7 offers a different aesthetic, emphasizing its French-ness. The interior fixtures and fittings showcase diamond patterns, seen in switches and the digital instrument display.

Opinions on the design may vary, as some may find it chic while others may consider it self-conscious. For instance, the dashboard clock with Art Deco-style graphics contrasts with the Modernist fixtures and fittings surrounding it.

The DS 7, previously known as the DS 7 Crossback, has been around for the past six years. The new model features a restyled front end, with a larger grill, slimmer headlamps, and vertical sidelights resembling claw marks. The lamp clusters at the rear have also slimmed down, and changes to the DS 7's brightwork indicate a refreshed appearance.

Inside, there are design tweaks as well. The dash features a large touch screen with widgets, making navigation relatively straightforward. However, like many high-end cars today, the sheer number of functions can be a bit overwhelming.

When it comes to power choices, there are 1.5-liter diesel versions and plug-in hybrids with 1.6 petrol engines. The hybrids can have one or two electric motors, depending on whether they have four-wheel drive or not. Unfortunately, there is no petrol-only version available.

We had the opportunity to drive an Opera E-TENSE 4x4 300, one of the five different trim levels. This particular model utilizes electric motors to boost performance and seamlessly switch between petrol and battery power. The car can also be driven in electric-only mode, with a claimed range of around 43 miles. However, in our experience, the battery ran out in about half that distance.

Charging the car can be done while driving or by plugging it into a 7kw EV charger, which takes approximately two hours for a full charge. Using a domestic socket trickle charge will take about six and a half hours.

Some criticisms of the DS 7 include the location of the electric window switches and parking brake switch on the outer edges of the center console, causing confusion. The brakes themselves are strong but initially feel spongy, requiring a firm push to engage.

Despite its size, the DS 7 is surprisingly quick, reaching 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and capable of a top speed of 146 mph. While some of its rivals have unyielding rides due to low-profile tires and stiff springing, the DS 7's suspension, with three settings, offers a firm but generally comfortable ride. 4x4 versions feature a computer-controlled suspension system that adjusts ride stiffness based on road surface imperfections, resulting in a smoother experience.

For such a bulky car, the DS 7 boasts nimble and precise steering, handling bends with unexpected precision. Mechanical refinement is also commendable, with electric mode providing virtually silent operation and the four-cylinder 1.6 petrol engine remaining unobtrusive. The DS 7 is a civilized companion, particularly on motorways, where wind buffeting is minimal.

The upgraded headlamp cluster illuminates country lanes effectively with a broad spread of white light, enhancing visibility during nighttime driving.

As an expensive car, the DS 7 is packed with features, including electric reclining rear seats and a range of safety and driver aids. Some functions, such as controlling the interior temperature and managing the plug-in charging system, can be operated remotely via phone.

In conclusion, the DS 7 offers a thoroughly pleasant driving experience with ample space for passengers and their belongings. It combines a nice driving feel with a wealth of safety and convenience features. Although lacking the brand recognition of BMW and Mercedes, the DS 7's niche appeal may be exactly what some buyers are looking for.
