Genesis GV60, GV70, and GV80 Receive Three IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Awards

If a vehicle is awarded the Top Safety Pick+ accolade by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), it means that the vehicle is considered as safe as technically possible. Genesis, the luxury division of Hyundai, recently achieved this recognition by earning three Top Safety Pick+ awards for three of its sport utility vehicles (SUVs).

The GV60, Genesis' first-ever electric vehicle based on the Hyundai E-GMP electric vehicle architecture, scored an acceptable rating for the ease of use of the child seat anchors. The GV70, which is available in both internal combustion and electric propulsion versions, was rated advanced instead of superior for both daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention. The larger and more luxurious GV80 earned an acceptable rating for its headlights and child seat anchors, with its rear-biased all-wheel drive (AWD) system.

Although there is room for improvement, it is important to note that all three of these Genesis vehicles performed exceptionally well in crashworthiness evaluations. These evaluations include tests such as the driver- and passenger-side small overlap front crash test, moderate overlap front crash test, and side crash test. Genesis, as the luxury division of Hyundai, strives to offer the best in terms of safety features and technology. Therefore, it is no surprise that the GV crossovers mentioned above earned the prestigious IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. These vehicles come equipped with at least eight standard airbags, Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance Assist, and Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, which is programmed to detect both cyclists and pedestrians.

The GV60, which shares its platform with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, is currently available in limited numbers at select retailers in 23 states. The 2024 model starts at $60,550 (excluding destination charge) for the Advanced version, while the Performance AWD variant costs $69,550. Although the Performance AWD offers impressive power, with the ability to generate 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet (700 Nm) of torque for short bursts, its range falls short with only 235 miles (378 kilometers) on the combined test cycle. The Advanced AWD version also has a relatively low range of 248 miles (399 kilometers).

The GV70, on the other hand, is manufactured at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) alongside the Electrified GV70 for the 2024 model year. This SUV is available with a choice of a 2.5-liter turbo, 3.5-liter turbo, or all-electric powertrain, with prices starting at $44,900.

The GV70 shares the same platform, known as the Hyundai-Kia M3, with the GV80, which is the largest utility vehicle in Genesis' lineup. It is worth noting that professional golfer Tiger Woods survived a severe car accident in February 2021 when he crashed a GV80 on Hawthorne Boulevard in Los Angeles. Despite the vehicle rolling multiple times, Tiger sustained injuries but survived thanks to the safety features and structural integrity of the GV80.

In conclusion, Genesis has demonstrated its commitment to safety by earning multiple IIHS Top Safety Pick+ awards for its SUVs. While there is still room for improvement in certain areas, these vehicles excel in crashworthiness evaluations and come equipped with advanced safety technologies. Whether it's the GV60, GV70, or GV80, Genesis vehicles prioritize the safety and well-being of their occupants.
