GM's "Ultium-Based Coupes" Set to Debut in 2026
【Summary】General Motors plans to introduce "Ultium-based coupes" by 2026, expanding its lineup of electric vehicles. While specific details are lacking, speculation suggests that the all-electric versions of the iconic Camaro and Corvette could be potential candidates. GM's Ultium-based EV lineup will include SUVs, sedans, hatchbacks, trucks, and now coupes, according to a video announcement.
General Motors is expanding its lineup of electric vehicles with a focus on its dedicated EV architectures and Ultium batteries. So far, the company has introduced SUVs and pickups like the GMC Hummer EV Pickup, Hummer EV SUV, and Cadillac Lyriq. However, there are more Ultium-based electric SUVs and trucks in the pipeline, including the Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Cadillac Escalade IQ, and Buick Electra E5 SUV.
In addition to these vehicles, General Motors will also include the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt EV and the Cadillac Celestiq ultra-luxury sedan in its Ultium lineup. And now, it seems that GM plans to add at least one coupe to its electric vehicle stable.
In a video announcement, GM mentioned that bi-directional charging, as well as vehicle-to-home (V2H) capability, will be available on "Ultium-based coupes" by 2026. The company stated, "By 2026, vehicle to home technology will be available in new Ultium-based SUVs, sedans, coupes, hatchbacks, trucks."
This statement from GM opens up possibilities for speculation, as it is the first time the company has acknowledged plans for Ultium-based coupes. Unfortunately, no further information was provided in the video.
However, if GM were to produce all-electric coupes, the Camaro and Corvette nameplates would be the most likely candidates. GM President Mark Reuss confirmed last year that a "fully electric version" of the Corvette would follow the E-Ray hybrid, which is set to enter production in the near future. While it is uncertain whether the BEV Corvette will be a coupe, there have been reports suggesting that GM may turn Corvette into a standalone EV brand, offering four-door and SUV models starting in 2025.
As for the Camaro, there is a higher possibility of it transitioning to an all-electric coupe, especially since GM announced that the 2024 model year will be the final one for the current generation. However, GM also stated that this is not the end for the Camaro nameplate, leaving room for speculation about an electric future.
With the mention of "Ultium-based coupes" in the video, it is hopeful that both the Corvette and the Camaro will adopt Ultium technology while maintaining their iconic two-door body styles. Additionally, it is worth considering that GM's BEV coupes could come from other brands like Cadillac and Buick, as seen with the Wildcat Concept.
