GM's "Ultium-Based Coupes" Set to Launch in 2026

General Motors is expanding its electric vehicle lineup with a range of models based on its dedicated EV architectures. These vehicles utilize Ultium batteries and drive units. So far, GM has introduced SUVs and pickups such as the GMC Hummer EV Pickup, Hummer EV SUV, and Cadillac Lyriq. However, more Ultium-based electric SUVs and trucks are on the way, including the Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Cadillac Escalade IQ, and Buick Electra E5 SUV.

In addition to these models, the Ultium lineup will also feature the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt EV and the ultra-luxury Cadillac Celestiq sedan, which is priced at $340,000 or more. Now, it seems that GM will also be adding at least one coupe to its EV lineup. In a video announcing the availability of V2H capability across its Ultium-based EVs by 2026, GM mentioned that bi-directional charging will also be offered on "Ultium based coupes."

This announcement raises a lot of speculation as it is the first time GM has acknowledged plans to build Ultium-based coupes. Unfortunately, the automaker did not provide any further details. However, if GM were to release all-electric coupes, the Camaro and Corvette nameplates would be the most likely candidates. Last year, GM President Mark Reuss confirmed that a "fully electric version" of the Corvette would follow the E-Ray hybrid, which is set to enter production this fall. While it is uncertain if the BEV Corvette will be a coupe, there were reports last year suggesting that GM plans to establish Corvette as a standalone EV brand, offering four-door and SUV models by 2025.

The Camaro, on the other hand, has a higher chance of becoming an all-electric coupe. GM previously stated that 2024 will be the final model year for the Camaro, but emphasized that it is not the end for the nameplate. With the mention of "Ultium-based coupes" in the video, it is hopeful that both the Corvette and the Camaro will transition to Ultium technology while retaining their iconic two-door body styles. Additionally, GM's BEV coupes could also come from Cadillac and Buick, as we remember the Wildcat Concept.
