Clean electricity regulations released by Ottawa
【Summary】Canada's draft clean electricity regulations will be announced today by Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault. The goal is to achieve a net-zero electricity grid by 2035. The regulations will play a crucial role in Canada's overall climate goals, as they will support the transition to zero-emission vehicles and other clean energy solutions. Despite the grid already being 85% clean, the demand is projected to double by 2050 due to the increasing use of electric transportation.
Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault is set to make an announcement today regarding the draft clean electricity regulations in Canada. These regulations are part of the government's efforts to achieve a net-zero electricity grid by 2035.
The main objective of the regulations is to provide guidance and support in reaching the target of a net-zero grid. The government has been actively seeking feedback on the regulatory framework for almost a year and will continue to consult on the draft regulations once they are released.
Having a net-zero grid is crucial for Canada to achieve its overall climate goals. Without clean electricity, even zero-emission vehicles can still contribute to greenhouse gas emissions through the power they consume.
Currently, the country's electricity grid is already almost 85 percent clean. However, with the expected increase in demand by 2050 due to the shift towards electric cars, buses, and trains, it is imperative to further enhance the cleanliness of the grid.
