Honda CR-V e:PHEV - A Review of its Plug-in and Go Appeal

The Honda CR-V, now in its sixth incarnation, maintains the dependable charm that has made it a popular choice among car buyers in the United States. While its conservative design lines may not be groundbreaking, the CR-V offers a reliable hybrid setup similar to the latest Honda Civic. However, it's the plug-in CR-V e:PHEV that shows the most promise.

Given the volatile fuel prices and the current economic climate, many people are seeking value for money in their vehicles. The CR-V e:PHEV offers the promise of 51 miles of electric-only driving, making it suitable for shopping trips to town centers or silent school runs.

The exterior design of the new Honda CR-V is not revolutionary, but it follows the standard SUV shape. It is slightly wider and longer than its predecessor, with an extended wheelbase. The car features stylish 18-inch alloys that enhance its overall look. Despite its size, the CR-V e:PHEV does not feel bulky.

The front end of the CR-V shares design elements with other Honda models, including LED headlights. The interior is practical and continues the successful trim themes seen in the latest Honda Civic. The CR-V is well-appointed and exhibits excellent build quality.

The latest CR-V is available in two hybrid versions or the e:PHEV plug-in model, which comes with a 17.7kWh battery. The 2-liter engine complements the car's size, and it offers the added benefit of electric-only mode and up to 51 miles of electric range. The e:PHEV effectively manages power distribution between the petrol engine and the battery.

The CR-V is quiet and agile in city driving, but on the motorway, the petrol-powered engine requires more effort to perform optimally. Sport mode enhances the driving experience, especially for tackling steep gradients. Despite its size, the CR-V handles corners well with minimal body roll.

The interior tech of the CR-V e:PHEV is not excessive but provides enough features to ensure convenience. The 10.2-inch TFT screen in front of the steering wheel is well-designed, although certain safety notifications and graphics can be bothersome. The blindspot camera on the central touchscreen can be distracting, but it can be turned off. The e:PHEV also includes Honda's Digital Key for remote operations.

LED lighting is a pleasing addition to the interior, enhancing areas such as the center console, footwells, and door handles. The CR-V strikes a good balance between modern technology and physical controls for climate settings and other functions.

The Honda CR-V is an excellent choice for family-oriented SUV buyers. It offers a range of up to 500 miles with the petrol and battery combination, making it suitable for longer journeys. The spacious boot can hold up to 586 liters of cargo, thanks to the integrated battery. The CR-V also performs well on shorter trips when utilizing the electric-only mode.

The main drawback of the PHEV Honda CR-V is its high price. While it comes with an impressive list of features and excellent build quality, many potential buyers may opt for the cheaper hybrid option or even consider the Toyota bZ4X. Alternatively, choosing a Lexus NX provides a similar experience in a more luxurious package. However, the CR-V offers a smooth and comfortable ride, which will appeal to existing CR-V owners who are looking to upgrade and have the necessary finances.

Overall, the plug-in version of the Honda CR-V is a success, despite its large size and price tag. It offers a reliable and efficient driving experience.
