IMI supports government probe of electric vehicles
【Summary】The IMI supports the UK government's inquiry into the electric vehicle experience, focusing on incentives, infrastructure, availability, and end-of-life disposal. The inquiry seeks industry and customer feedback on challenges with EVs as the government considers its 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel vehicles. The IMI emphasizes the importance of input from the automotive sector and urges the government to incentivize a robust EV market.
The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has called on the government to address various factors related to electric vehicles (EVs) as it launches a new inquiry into the EV experience. The inquiry aims to gather feedback from industry and customers regarding their real-life challenges with EVs, as the government evaluates the feasibility of its proposed 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles.
Haley Pells, the IMI's policy and public affairs lead, expressed the organization's full support for the UK government's ambition to transition to zero-emission vehicles. Pells emphasized the importance of understanding the barriers, costs, and benefits of transitioning to EVs by the proposed phase-out dates of 2030 and 2035. The IMI is eager to contribute to the inquiry and applauds the Environment and Climate Change Committee for recognizing the significance of input from both the automotive sector and motorists.
Pells stressed the need for robust incentives to foster a thriving EV market in the UK. While acknowledging the ambitious nature of the phase-out dates, she believes they can be achieved through collective efforts, industry partnerships, and clear policy guidelines. Pells also highlighted the importance of developing a comprehensive roadmap with key dates and timelines to assist all stakeholders in preparing for the transition.
In addition to incentives and infrastructure, Pells urged the government to consider solutions for battery disposal and recycling. She emphasized the importance of evaluating the entire lifecycle of EVs to ensure sustainability is adequately addressed.
