JLR to Introduce Compact Electric 'Defender Sport' in Brand Expansion
【Summary】JLR is diversifying its brand with the potential release of a new small electric SUV called the Defender Sport. Expected in 2027, it will be based on the same platform as the electric version of the Defender and will likely feature similar styling cues. This move aligns with JLR's plan to expand its EV lineup in the coming years.
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is undergoing significant changes, with the carmaker separating its core models into individual brands and announcing the release of several new electric vehicles (EVs). Among the anticipated releases is a smaller model of the Defender, a long-standing rumor that seems to be inching closer to reality.
Recently, JLR announced an electric version of the Defender, and it is expected that a smaller version will follow suit as a fully electric model utilizing the same platform known as the Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA).
In an exclusive interview with JLR CEO Adrian Mardell, he hinted at the possibility of creating other vehicles within the Defender family. He stated, "By this time next Global Media Day, we'll be clear on what we are comfortable with producing off EMA." This suggests that the release of the smaller Defender model is imminent.
According to rumors, the smaller Defender could be named the Defender Sport, drawing inspiration from the Range Rover Sport, which is the smaller sibling of the Range Rover. Exclusive renders provide a glimpse of what the Defender Sport might look like.
It is expected that the smaller car will incorporate styling elements from the core Defender model, allowing each brand within the JLR family to maintain its distinct identity. Shorter overhangs and a boxy utilitarian look, characteristic of the Defender lineage, are likely to be featured in the design of the Defender Sport.
