Kia Stonic car catches fire on busy road, driver escapes

This is the astonishing moment when a Kia Stonic worth £25,000 suddenly caught fire while driving along the road. The incident took place in Luton, less than two miles away from the location where a massive fire destroyed a brand new £20 million parking structure at Luton airport just a week before.

Workers from a waste management firm who were travelling behind the car noticed the flames coming from underneath the vehicle. The car, which was carrying two passengers, was a white Kia Stonic. In a dramatic video, the workers can be seen urgently alerting the female driver and male passenger inside the car about the emergency. The male passenger, wearing a red T-shirt, quickly retrieves something from the boot before moving out of harm's way.

The incident occurred in Luton, where a previous airport fire resulted in the destruction of 1,500 cars after a car exploded in the new parking structure. The workers from Boxell Removals honked their horn and shouted at the couple inside the car, urging them to get out. In the video, one of the workers can be seen rushing towards the burning car when they got stuck in traffic. He yells, "Get out! Your car is on fire, man, underneath!"

As the fire intensifies, the pair can be seen standing on the side of Crawley Green Road. Police arrive at the scene and stop traffic in both directions, while firefighters rush to extinguish the flames. According to the DVLA website, the car is listed as being petrol and has a 19-plate.

A spokesperson from Boxell Removals commented on the incident, saying, "Friday the 13th hit this couple hard." Local resident Alfie Clarke remarked, "Luton has a thing with cars on fire." Others expressed surprise at the situation, with one person asking, "How does that even happen?"

Despite the shocking nature of the event, some individuals injected humor into the situation. Robyn admitted, "I was today years old when I realized cars on fire don't blow up, like they do in movies." Becky jokingly said, "With the price of shopping, I would have grabbed it and all. Glad they're safe though."

A spokesperson from Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service provided details about the incident, stating, "On Friday, 13 October at around 14.24pm, we were called to reports of a vehicle on fire on Crawley Green Road, Luton. One fire engine from Luton attended the incident, and firefighters used breathing apparatus, hose reels, and a thermal imaging camera to safely extinguish the fire. A scene safety zone was implemented by Bedfordshire Police alongside the fire service. Fire Control received five repeat calls regarding this incident."
