Toyota introduces upgraded Hilux GR Sport II

The sporty pickup market has been dominated by Ford and its Raptors, but Toyota is now stepping up its game with the new GR Sport II. Despite Toyota's success in the Dakar rally with the Hilux and the growing popularity of its Gazoo Racing brand, they have yet to release a Raptor-rivalling pickup. However, the GR Sport II is a step in the right direction.

The GR Sport II takes the Hilux 'to new heights' with its wider tracks, measuring 140mm at the front and 155mm at the rear. This not only enhances the pickup's physical presence but also improves stability and steering response. Toyota claims that this is the 'best-driving Hilux yet' with reduced roll and increased precision. The upgrades include lighter wheels, new monotube dampers, and the replacement of rear drums with discs, resulting in better off-road performance with increased ride height and approach angle.

The exterior of the GR Sport II has received a rugged makeover, featuring a bold 'TOYOTA' emblem on the grille, black accents, GR Sport badges, and red brake calipers. The attention to detail continues inside with red seatbelts, GR seats, and aluminum pedals. Even the rear coil springs are colored red, although they may be hard to spot.

However, the GR Sport II is lacking in one area - its powertrain. It is still powered by the same 204hp/369lb ft diesel engine introduced in 2020. While this may not live up to the rally raid look, it is important to note that the GR Sport II remains a capable pickup with a 1,000kg payload. Perhaps the GR Sport III will finally rival the Ranger Raptor in terms of power. The GR Sport II will be available for sale in early 2024, with deliveries expected later in the year.
