Electrification is becoming increasingly popular in the car industry, and Lamborghini is not exempt from this trend. In response to the demand for hybrid power, Lamborghini is planning to introduce new models with hybrid engines. By 2024, hybrid engines will be featured across the entire Lamborghini range, including the Urus SUV.

Recent spy shots indicate that development is well underway for a new plug-in hybrid Urus. It is expected to share its powertrain with the recently facelifted Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid. When it launches next year, the Urus PHEV is projected to offer around 730bhp, making it one of the most powerful SUVs available.

The presence of a high-voltage sticker on the side of the prototype confirms that it is indeed an electrified model. Although there don't seem to be many significant design changes compared to the current Urus, some subtle updates can be seen beneath the camouflage. These include new y-shaped horizontal grille slats and slimmer headlights.

To surpass the power and efficiency of the current 657bhp Urus Performante, the PHEV will borrow its powertrain from the Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid. This includes a 4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine and a 174bhp electric motor. The Cayenne generates a combined output of 729bhp and 701lb ft of torque, and it is expected that the Urus hybrid will at least match these figures.

This would position the Urus PHEV ahead of competitors such as the Range Rover Sport SV, Aston Martin DBX707, and even the Ferrari Purosangue in terms of power. Additionally, the Lamborghini should be able to match or surpass the Cayenne's acceleration time of 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 190mph.

The new Turbo E-Hybrid from Porsche can achieve up to 45 miles of pure electric running, thanks to its 25.9kWh battery located under the boot floor. It is expected that the Urus PHEV will have a similar electric range. However, due to the additional weight of the electric hardware, the Urus PHEV could potentially weigh around 2.5 tons when unveiled.
