Lotus is preparing to introduce its first sedan since the Carlton in the early 1990s. The British performance brand recently released a teaser video showcasing a sleek four-door model known as the Emeya. Set to debut on September 7, the Emeya will be an electric sedan and will join Lotus' growing lineup of mainstream electric vehicles, which includes the Eletre mid-size SUV and a compact crossover code-named the Type 134.

The teaser video provides a glimpse of the Emeya's design, which appears to be influenced by the Tesla Model S and the Eletre. The front of the sedan features twin-element daytime running lights, while the rear showcases a light strip similar to the Eletre. Spy shots of prototypes have also revealed that the Emeya will feature the Eletre's triangular active shutters and may offer cameras instead of traditional side mirrors, although this feature may not be available in the U.S.

While Lotus has confirmed that the Eletre will be available for sale in the U.S. in 2024, the availability of the other EVs in the American market has not been mentioned. If approved for a U.S. launch, it is likely that the Emeya will also arrive in 2024. The Emeya is expected to share the same Electric Premium Architecture platform as the Eletre, which supports dual-motor all-wheel drive, air suspension, and fast-charging capabilities.

Potential rivals for the Emeya include the Audi E-Tron GT, Porsche Taycan, Lucid Air, and high-end versions of the Tesla Model S. Lotus' sister brand, Polestar, is also developing a similar model called the Polestar 5, set to be launched next year.

The development of the Emeya, along with the Eletre and the upcoming compact crossover, is being handled by Lotus Technology, the division responsible for non-sports car models at Lotus. Production of these vehicles will take place at a plant in Wuhan, China.

In addition to the Emeya, Lotus has plans to launch the Type 134 compact crossover around 2025, followed by a new sports car code-named the Type 135 in 2026. All future Lotus models will be electric vehicles, as the current Emira sports car marks the end of Lotus' gas-powered era.
