Mazda's commitment to affordable models

MAZDA Australia is committed to offering more affordable models alongside its push towards a more 'premium' brand status. The company recently introduced two expensive new models, the Mazda CX-60 and CX-90 SUVs, which have received criticism for their high prices. However, Mazda Australia's managing director, Vinesh Bhindi, stated that the company understands the budget constraints of buyers and that these new models are part of a strategy to retain customers and offer something different.

While the Mazda Premium models aim to provide luxury elements such as advanced technology, powertrain options, and premium materials, Bhindi emphasized that the value proposition must still be strong. Mazda intends to remain a mainstream appeal brand in Australia but with an expanded range of offerings. The introduction of the CX-60 and CX-90 targets customers who desire a more premium experience beyond the CX-5, CX-8, or CX-9 models.

Bhindi confirmed that Mazda will continue to offer more attainable options for buyers who prefer not to spend as much. He mentioned that there will be a new-generation replacement model for the popular Mazda CX-5 SUV. Additionally, he hinted at the introduction of the Mazda CX-80 once production of the CX-9 stops. Mazda aims to provide more choices to cater to different customer preferences.

Although Mazda has some aging models in its more affordable range, such as the Mazda2 and CX-3, Bhindi assured that these models are not being abandoned. While he couldn't confirm if there will be new-generation replacements, he mentioned that updates are coming soon. Mazda constantly updates its affordable cars and remains committed to offering a diverse product lineup in Australia.

Mazda's priorities align with the large product platform, but they also have plans for a scalable architecture designed for battery electric vehicle (BEV) technology. Bhindi couldn't provide specific details about which models will be offered, but he emphasized that Mazda Australia strives to bring all available products to the Australian market. They actively work to make niche models and technologies available to Australians, even if the demand is limited.

Currently, Mazda offers 14 different models in Australia, with the affordable CX-3 SUV leading sales. The CX-3 has experienced a significant increase in sales, accounting for nearly one-fifth of all new Mazdas sold in 2023. As of the end of July, Mazda has sold 58,731 units in Australia.
