Mazda's commitment to affordable models
【Summary】Mazda Australia is not abandoning affordable models despite the recent launch of expensive new models. The company aims to push towards a more 'premium' brand status but understands the budget constraints of buyers. They plan to offer more choices, including a new-generation replacement for the popular Mazda CX-5 midsize SUV. Although there may be ageing models in the more affordable range, Mazda assures that they constantly update and prioritize bringing new models to Australia.
MAZDA Australia is committed to offering more affordable models alongside its push towards a more 'premium' brand status. While the company recently launched expensive new models, such as the Mazda CX-60 and CX-90 SUVs, critics argue that these prices make the brand less accessible to mainstream customers.
However, Mazda Australia's managing director, Vinesh Bhindi, explained that the introduction of these "Mazda Premium" models is not a complete repositioning of the brand in Australia. Instead, they are aimed at retaining existing customers by offering something different in terms of technology, powertrain, driving dynamics, and luxury elements. Bhindi emphasized that the value proposition must still be strong.
Despite the focus on premium models, Mazda Australia has no plans to abandon more affordable options. Bhindi confirmed that a new-generation replacement model for the popular Mazda CX-5 midsize SUV is in the works. The company aims to offer a wider range of choices, including the CX-60, CX-8, CX-90, and eventually the CX-80.
While some of Mazda's more affordable models, like the Mazda2 and CX-3, have been around for several years, Bhindi stated that they will continue to be updated and refreshed. Although he couldn't confirm if new-generation replacements are in development, he assured customers that Mazda is committed to these affordable cars.
Mazda's priorities for future models include the scalable architecture, which is designed for electric vehicle technology. While Bhindi couldn't provide specific details on which models will be offered, he emphasized that Mazda Australia works to bring all available products to the Australian market.
Currently, Mazda Australia offers 14 different models, with the affordable CX-3 SUV being the top-selling vehicle. It accounts for nearly one-fifth of Mazda's sales in 2023, with the brand selling a total of 58,731 units by the end of July.
