Mercedes G-Wagon goes electric: Our exclusive test drive
【Summary】Mercedes-Benz is releasing an electric version of its G-Wagon SUV after Arnold Schwarzenegger pushed for its creation in 2018. The electric G-Wagon offers instant torque, a silent ride, and advanced software for off-road driving. The vehicle has a lower center of gravity and impressive off-road capabilities. It features a high-res dual touchscreen display and a unique "G Turn" setting that allows the vehicle to spin 360 degrees without moving significantly.
Arnold Schwarzenegger's request for an electric version of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, known as the G-Wagon, may have led to its creation. At the debut of the V8 G-Class in 2018, Schwarzenegger urged the then head of Mercedes-Benz, Dieter Zetsche, to produce a battery-powered SUV in Austria, near Schwarzenegger's hometown. Despite not having a product plan in place, Mercedes agreed to the request.
Now, five years later, I have the opportunity to be the first non-Mercedes employee to test drive the electric G-Wagon. The camouflaged vehicle retains the iconic design elements of the original G-Class, but with the addition of electric motors, instant torque, and advanced software for off-road driving. If Mercedes can overcome production challenges, the electric G-Wagon is poised to attract both loyal fans and new enthusiasts.
During my test drive with Ola Källenius, the CEO of Mercedes, we navigate the rugged terrain of Schöckl Mountain. The electric G-Wagon handles the off-road obstacles with ease, thanks to its lower center of gravity and exceptional grip. It accelerates swiftly and stops with good balance, showcasing its capabilities on steep hills and uneven surfaces. The regenerative braking system also helps to recoup energy, making it competitive with other electric vehicles.
The electric G-Wagon's exterior closely resembles its conventional counterpart, with only subtle modifications for improved efficiency. The interior is expected to be similar, featuring high-resolution dual touchscreen displays and intuitive touch controls on the steering wheel. Additionally, the G-Wagon boasts a unique feature called the "G Turn," which allows the vehicle to spin 360 degrees in place.
Despite its impressive off-road capabilities, the electric G-Wagon is not just a rugged vehicle for extreme terrains. It offers a comfortable and silent ride, allowing passengers to fully immerse themselves in the natural surroundings. The electric G-Wagon is set to be released in the market next year, and I eagerly anticipate its arrival.
While the electric G-Wagon may be a desirable vehicle, owning a Mercedes-Benz G-Class has already become a status symbol. With a hefty price tag and a devoted following, the G-Class is favored by celebrities, off-road enthusiasts, and luxury car enthusiasts. The demand for the G-Wagon has led to waiting lists of over two years, causing Mercedes to temporarily halt new orders. However, the company is prepared to increase production capacity and is committed to electrifying its entire product range.
