Most common issue with used vehicles in the UK: faulty brakes

AA cars has issued a warning to used car buyers in Britain, advising them to be cautious about faulty brakes. According to data collected from expert assessors, 70% of the second-hand vehicles inspected had at least one fault. The most common issue found was related to brakes, with an average cost of £400 for repairs. Other common flaws included signs of previous accident damage and corrosion, as well as clutch malfunctions, which could cost between £600 and £800 to fix. The most expensive faults, potentially costing up to £1,200, were related to timing chain and belt noises.

In addition to highlighting common faults, the survey also revealed that many buyers lack knowledge about potential issues in used cars. While 85% of buyers claimed to lift up the car's bonnet for inspection, 45% admitted to having no idea what they should be looking for. Only 24% correctly identified brakes as the most common flaw. Edmund King, the AA president, emphasized the importance of pre-purchase vehicle inspections, comparing them to surveys conducted before buying a house. He explained that many problems identified by vehicle inspectors are difficult for average buyers to spot. With 70% of used cars assessed having some kind of issue, purchasing without an inspection poses a significant financial risk.

King further emphasized the benefits of vehicle inspections, which can provide buyers with peace of mind and the opportunity to negotiate a lower price or request repairs. He highlighted that AA vehicle inspectors conduct up to 206 checks on a car, a task that is nearly impossible for non-motoring experts to replicate. By getting an inspection, buyers can avoid unexpected expenses and make informed decisions about their purchase.
