The Tesla Model 3 has been available for six years and has undergone various minor updates during that time. However, a new update called Project Highland could bring a comprehensive refresh to the popular electric sedan.

Leaked images of the potential refresh were posted on the Cochespias Twitter page, a Spanish-language automotive account known for spy shots and leaks. These images, which appear to be photos taken of a screen, show changes to the front fascia and headlights, as well as a diffuser-like arrangement at the rear. The authenticity of these images is uncertain, but they provide a glimpse into what the upcoming Model 3 refresh might look like.

The front fascia of the Model 3 has been redesigned to have a smoother and cleaner appearance. The fog light pods that were previously mounted low on the sides have been removed, and the headlights now feature a sleeker design with integrated daytime running lights.

At the rear, the leaked images reveal a significant change with a diffuser-like arrangement cutting into the bumper. This differs from the plain rear bumper seen on previous models. The photos, however, do not provide enough detail to determine the extent of the change or whether there are any aerodynamic modifications. The rear tails have also been given a more modern claw-like design.

Project Highland is expected to bring broader changes to the Model 3 beyond the visible ones in the leaked images. The powertrain, interior, and central display of the car may also receive updates. However, full details will only be revealed by Tesla in due time. The main focus of the update seems to be reducing component counts for cost savings while giving the car a refreshed external appearance.

Sources suggest that the Project Highland update will first go into production at Gigafactory Shanghai and Tesla's Fremont, California plant. Production is expected to begin in the third quarter of this year.

A refresh for the Model 3 is necessary considering its long presence in the market. Tesla faces increasing competition every year as more electric sedan rivals enter the market. The company hopes that this update, combined with its aggressive pricing strategy, will help maintain strong sales.
