New Tesla Model 3: Highland Edition
【Summary】The new Tesla Model 3 Highland update brings a comprehensive refresh to the popular electric sedan. Changes include a smoother front fascia, updated headlights, and a diffuser-like arrangement at the rear. The update also brings improvements to range, interior materials, and features. Production has already begun in Gigafactory Shanghai, with deliveries expected to start in October for Europe and the Middle East. Tesla aims to stay competitive in the EV sedan market with this refresh.
The Tesla Model 3, which has been on sale for six years, is rumored to receive a comprehensive refresh with the new Project Highland update. One noticeable change is the smoother and cleaner front fascia, which no longer features the small fog light pods. The headlights have also been redesigned with integrated daytime running lights, and the turn signal area now has a new strake.
At the rear, the update includes a diffuser-like arrangement in the bumper, giving it a more stylish look compared to the previous plain rear bumper. However, it is unclear from the limited resolution photos whether there are any aerodynamic changes or just cosmetic updates. The rear tails have also been redesigned with a modern claw-like design.
In addition to the visible changes, the update is expected to bring broader changes to the Model 3's fundamentals. Tesla aims to reduce component counts for cost savings while refreshing the car's external and interior appearance to appeal to customers.
Regarding the range figures, the updated rear-wheel-drive Model 3 achieves an impressive WLTP range of 344 miles with 18-inch wheels for the standard model and 421 miles for the Long Range model. This represents a 12 percent improvement over the previous Model 3's range figures of 305 and 374 miles, respectively. Although the U.S. market figures may differ due to the EPA's testing cycle, it indicates that the new Model 3 will offer more range.
Inside the cabin, the Model 3 has also been updated. The interior now features aluminum and new fabric materials, along with a fresh ambient lighting system. Tesla claims that the cabin has been sonically improved with new acoustic glass and soundproofing materials. Other changes include a new 8-inch rear display screen with infotainment and climate controls, steering-mounted controls replacing column-mounted stalks, and slimmer bezels on the main 15.4-inch infotainment screen.
Sources suggest that the Project Highland update will first go into production at Gigafactory Shanghai, with indications that manufacturing has already begun. Tesla's Fremont, California plant is also expected to produce the new facelift models. Deliveries are reportedly set to begin in October for Europe and the Middle East, although availability for the U.S. market has not been announced.
Given the increasing competition in the EV sedan market, a refresh for the Model 3 makes sense. Tesla will be hoping that the update, combined with its aggressive pricing strategy, will help maintain strong sales in the face of new rivals entering the market.
