Ohio DOT Collaborates with Honda on Road Condition Management Project

Ohio DOT Collaborates with Honda on Road Condition Management Project

Honda, in collaboration with three technology partners - i-Probe Inc., The University of Cincinnati, and Parsons Corporation - and the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), will pilot an advanced prototype of a road condition management system. ODOT has invested $700,000 for data analysis and evaluation in the project. The system will utilize vehicle-generated data to identify and report hazardous road conditions in Ohio, potentially making roadways safer and reducing vehicle damage costs for consumers.

The two-year research project, led by Honda, will leverage the research conducted in 2022 and the Honda Drive Data Service. The funding will cover the project work by the three partners. The project aims to enhance the efficiency of maintenance work for ODOT and empower drivers to contribute to building safer roadways.

The road condition management system will use data collected by Honda test vehicles equipped with Advanced Driver Assistive Systems (ADAS) to identify roadway damage and inform road maintenance operations in Ohio. The data collected will be analyzed and evaluated to pinpoint issues such as potholes, damaged guardrails, and road sign wear. The system will also focus on roadway striping deficiencies, pothole development, ride quality, and the condition of berms.

Honda and its partners will provide the roadway condition data to ODOT through a web dashboard. ODOT will use the data to enhance its regular visual inspections and evaluate the long-term use of such data for maintenance and other operations. The project aims to improve the overall driving experience and prepare infrastructure for future mobility needs, including autonomous vehicles.
