Samsung SDI: Batteries Surpass Performance Target

Samsung SDI, a leading EV battery manufacturer, is expanding its battery business in the first half of 2023. In their recent quarterly report, the South Korean company mentioned solid-state batteries (SSB) and 46xx-type cylindrical battery cells as future growth engines.

It is interesting to note that Samsung SDI has been working on large cylindrical battery cells for some time now. Unofficial reports about their development emerged in May, June, and September of 2022.

The company specifically mentioned "line setup" in relation to SSB and 46xx batteries, indicating that preparations are underway. Currently, Samsung SDI offers a range of cylindrical cells (1865, 2170), as well as pouch and prismatic batteries.

The use of the "46Φ" sign suggests that Samsung SDI is working on multiple versions of battery cells with a 46 mm diameter and different heights to cater to various customers. This aligns with earlier rumors. For example, Tesla uses 4680-type cells (80 mm in height), while BMW announced two types: 4695 and 46120.

One of the most intriguing aspects is that the 46xx batteries achieved their performance targets ahead of schedule, prompting Samsung SDI to start preparing samples for customers. The specific performance achievements are not disclosed, but factors such as energy density, charging/discharging time, cycle life, and costs are crucial for battery performance.

If samples are being sent to customers, it is reasonable to expect several months, if not more than a year, before series production. This time is necessary for external tests of battery packs and feedback to address any necessary improvements.

According to unofficial sources from The Elec, Samsung SDI plans to expand its battery factory in Goed, Hungary, to accommodate 46120-type cylindrical battery cells. This form factor and location suggest that production is intended for BMW, which has announced the use of 46120-type batteries in its next-generation electric cars. It is worth noting that Samsung SDI has been a long-standing battery supplier for BMW's prismatic type batteries used in models like the i3 and i8. Additionally, other customers, including General Motors, have signed up for unspecified cylindrical battery cells from Samsung SDI.

However, the scale of production, as reported unofficially, is expected to be 10 gigawatt-hours (GWh), which may not be a high number. This quantity could potentially be sufficient for BMW if CATL and EVE Energy also supply 46xx batteries in Europe.

In a separate report, The Elec mentions that Philenergy, a battery equipment manufacturer backed by Samsung SDI, will launch a new line of products specifically designed for 46xx-type cylindrical batteries. This further emphasizes Samsung SDI's serious approach to the new large cylindrical format.
