Women account for nearly 24 percent of electric vehicle purchases from Tata Motors, which holds a dominant 72 percent market share in India's electric car market. According to Vivek Srivatsa, Head-Marketing, Sales and Service Strategy at Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd, this can be attributed to factors such as the ease of driving, safety features, and the increasing availability of charging infrastructure.

Previously, electric vehicles were seen as a secondary choice for customers when buying a car. However, Srivatsa noted that a majority of customers now consider electric vehicles as their primary choice. The states of Kerala and Maharashtra are leading the way in terms of electric vehicle adoption, he added.

Srivatsa, who was attending a women's car rally in Kochi, highlighted the rapid growth in Tata EV sales over the past few years, demonstrating customers' quick adaptation to change. He stated that in FY20, they sold approximately 1,200 EVs, followed by around 4,200 units in FY21, and approximately 19,000 units in FY22. Last year, they achieved a significant milestone by selling 50,000 units, representing a 154 percent growth over FY22.

Tata Motors recently surpassed the milestone of selling 100,000 EVs in the country. Srivatsa mentioned that it took 44 months to sell the first 10,000 units since the launch of their first electric vehicle in 2017. However, the next 10,000-50,000 units were sold in just 15 months, and the subsequent 50,000 units only took nine months. He anticipates the next 50,000 sales to occur within 5-6 months.

The company has plans to introduce six more electric vehicle models by 2025, bringing the total number of variants to 10. In Q1 FY24, Tata Motors achieved its highest-ever quarterly sales of 19,346 vehicles, representing a 105 percent increase compared to Q1 FY23. Srivatsa attributed this growth to the strong market response to the Tiago EV, while demand for other electric vehicles remained consistent.

According to Srivatsa, Kerala boasts one of the best charging infrastructures in the country, further supporting the adoption of electric vehicles in the state.
