Tesla Cybertruck VIN Decoder Reveals Different Drivetrain Options

Tesla has managed to keep the technical details of its highly anticipated Cybertruck under wraps, but some information is starting to emerge thanks to regulatory files. The NHTSA recently published the 2024 Tesla VIN decoder, which provides some insight into the Cybertruck's drivetrain configurations and GVWR rating.

While Tesla fans eagerly await the Cybertruck's delivery event scheduled for November 30, there are concerns about the production and delivery timeline. Elon Musk has previously expressed difficulties with the manufacturing process, so it's uncertain how many Cybertruck pickups will actually be delivered next month. The Tesla Semi, for example, has not entered series production even a year after its delivery event.

Despite being just six weeks away from the big moment, Tesla has yet to release any official technical data about the electric pickup. However, the Tesla community has managed to uncover some details through various means, such as using a measuring tape to take measurements. This has led to speculation about whether Tesla is intentionally hiding something or if the specifications are still being finalized.

Nevertheless, certain technical details must be communicated to regulators before the delivery event. Tesla needs to obtain certifications, including safety assessments and EPA ratings, for the Cybertruck. This means that the best-kept secrets about the vehicle will soon be revealed. In fact, the NHTSA has already published Tesla's official 2024 VIN decoder, which sheds some light on the Cybertruck's specifications.

One important piece of information in the VIN decoder is the available drivetrain variants. According to the document, the 2024 Tesla Cybertruck will come in a dual-motor standard variant and a triple-motor Performance configuration. However, there won't be any single-motor or quad-motor versions offered, at least not in 2024. It's possible that Tesla may introduce more trims in the future, but for now, the focus seems to be on simplicity and prioritizing the most popular variants.

Another significant detail revealed in the VIN decoder is the Cybertruck's GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating). The dual-motor variant has a maximum weight, including passengers and cargo, that qualifies it as a Class G vehicle with a GVWR between 3,629 kg and 4,082 kg (8,001-9,000 lbs.). On the other hand, the heavier Triple-Motor version is classified as a Class H vehicle with a GVWR greater than 4,082 kg to 4,536 kg (9,001-10,000 lbs.). It's important to note that the GVWR rating does not indicate the actual weight of the vehicle, but rather the maximum weight at which it can safely operate with its payload.

However, the Cybertruck's GVWR rating may pose some challenges for certifications in Europe. In Europe, drivers need a special license for vehicles over 3,500 kg (7,700 lbs.), and these vehicles are speed-limited to 90 kph (56 mph). These factors may deter potential buyers from Europe if the Cybertruck eventually becomes available in the region.
