Caravan holidays have become increasingly popular in the UK, offering convenience, affordability, and fun. However, with the changing motoring landscape, it can be challenging to determine which car models are the best for towing. Luckily, the Caravan and Motorhome Club (CMC) Towcar Awards are here to help. This year's awards have seen a significant change, with nine pure electric vehicles (EVs) included as contenders. Previously, there was skepticism about electric cars and caravanning due to concerns about range, charger anxiety, and power consumption. However, perceptions are changing, and car manufacturers are taking towing with an electrified vehicle seriously.

Nick Lomas, Director General of the CMC, emphasized the importance of providing professional and unbiased information to those who plan to tow. Auto Express is part of the team that puts cars and caravan combinations through their paces at the Millbrook proving ground, contributing to the selection process for the Towcar of the Year award.

The Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Platinum Edition has been named the Overall Towcar of the Year and Class winner for Caravan Weight Over 1,700kg. With a kerbweight of 2,500kg, noseweight of 140kg, and max towing capacity of 3,500kg, the Cayenne is an impressive tow car. Its petrol V6 engine combined with a battery and motor provide 456bhp, allowing for quick acceleration and a top speed of 157mph. The Cayenne also offers the option of driving up to 22 miles in electric-only mode, making it cleaner for city driving. The judges praised its stability, ride, handling, and spacious interior.

The Volkswagen ID. Buzz 204PS 77kWh Pro Style has been named the Class winner for Caravan Weight Up to 1,100kg. This retro-inspired electric vehicle offers style and performance. With a kerbweight of 2,502kg, noseweight of 100kg, and max towing capacity of 1,000kg, the ID. Buzz may have limited towing capacity compared to its size, but it handles well within its parameters. The judges appreciated its smoothness, visibility, spacious interior, and claimed 251-mile electric range.

The Skoda Enyaq Coupé iV 82kWh vRS has been named the Class winner for Caravan Weight 1,100kg-1,300kg. This sporty electric SUV offers a comfortable and stable towing experience. With a kerbweight of 2,307kg, noseweight of 75kg, and max towing capacity of 1,200kg, the Enyaq Coupé is a suitable choice for those with a lightweight caravan habit. The judges praised its quality, comfortable sports seats, and stylish design.

The Skoda Octavia Estate 2.0 TDI 150PS DSG SE L has been named the Class winner for Caravan Weight 1,300kg-1,500kg. This diesel-powered estate car is highly regarded for its towing capabilities. With a kerbweight of 1,577kg, noseweight of 80kg, and max towing capacity of 1,600kg, the Octavia Estate offers excellent performance when hitched. Its spacious interior, elegant design, and diesel economy make it a compelling choice for family transport.
