Caravan holidays have become increasingly popular in the UK, offering convenience, affordability, and fun. However, with the changing landscape of motoring, it can be difficult to determine which models are the best tow cars to buy. That's where the Caravan and Motorhome Club (CMC) Towcar Awards come in. This year, the awards have seen a significant change, with nine pure electric vehicles (EVs) included as contenders. The perception that electric cars and caravanning don't mix is changing, and car makers are taking the world of towing with an electrified vehicle seriously. The CMC aims to provide professional, qualified, and unbiased information to help those who plan to tow.

The Caravan and Motorhome Club driving judges, including Auto Express, test the cars and caravan combinations at the Millbrook proving ground. The tests cover various aspects such as hill starts, handling, manoeuvrability, acceleration, braking, stability, and practicality. The overall Tow car of the Year and Class winner in the Caravan Weight Over 1,700kg category is the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Platinum Edition. With a kerbweight of 2,500kg, noseweight of 140kg, and a maximum towing capacity of 3,500kg, the Cayenne offers impressive performance and stability. It combines a petrol V6 engine with a battery and motor, providing 456bhp, a 0-62mph time of five seconds, and a top speed of 157mph. The Cayenne can also drive up to 22 miles in electric-only mode. The judges praised its agile handling and stability when towing a caravan.

The Volkswagen ID. Buzz 204PS 77kWh Pro Style emerged as the Class winner in the Caravan Weight Up to 1,100kg category. This retro-inspired electric vehicle offers style and performance. Despite its limited towing capacity of 1,000kg, the ID. Buzz excels within its parameters. Its rear-mounted motor provides smooth acceleration, and the underfloor 77kWh battery ensures stability. The ID. Buzz's boxy design, twin sliding rear passenger doors, massive tailgate, and spacious interior make it a practical choice for families and festivals.

In the Caravan Weight 1,100kg-1,300kg category, the Skoda Enyaq Coupé iV 82kWh vRS takes the Class win. Although the Enyaq Coupé vRS has a limited towing capacity compared to petrol and diesel rivals, its power and stability make it an appealing choice for those with a lightweight caravan habit. The car's four-wheel drive, high kerbweight, and low centre of gravity contribute to its stability on the road. The Skoda Enyaq also offers a range of up to 309 miles, ensuring it meets the towing requirements of many drivers.

Finally, in the Caravan Weight 1,300kg-1,500kg category, the Skoda Octavia Estate 2.0 TDI 150PS DSG SE L emerges as the Class winner. The Octavia Estate is renowned for its versatility and has proven to be an excellent tow car. The 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine coupled with the DSG automatic gearbox provides a powerful and reliable towing experience. The Octavia's interior offers a premium feel and ample space for families and their belongings.
