In a recent interview, Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda expressed his desire to revive the Celica name, but he made it clear that the decision does not rest solely with him.

The last Toyota Celica was produced in 2006, but there are indications that the iconic nameplate may soon make a comeback. During a livestreamed interview with the Toyota Times YouTube channel, Toyoda was asked about the possibility of a new Celica. Initially hesitant, he mentioned that he is now on the executive side of the company since stepping down as CEO. However, he dropped some hints that could be seen as encouraging for Celica enthusiasts.

When asked if he had requested the return of the car, Toyoda replied, "Well, I have, but I don't know what name it will come out under." This statement is seen as a positive sign for the potential revival of the Celica.

However, Toyoda clarified that even as the chairman, his request does not guarantee the production of a new Celica. He admitted that there are people within Toyota who may refuse his request. He mentioned his previous experiences with the Crown and the Prius, where his opinions were not always embraced. Nevertheless, he emphasized the importance of having discussions to create ever-better cars.

During the interview, Toyoda also referenced the Rally Hokkaido event where they were speaking. He highlighted the achievements of Juha Kankkunen, a Finnish rally driver who won multiple titles with a Toyota Celica. Toyoda's mention of Kankkunen and his success with the Celica suggests a connection to the potential revival of the iconic model.

With the recent return of the Supra, there is growing interest in bringing back famous nameplates from Toyota's past. However, the exact plans for the Celica's revival remain unknown. Toyoda and Toyota have yet to reveal their intentions, leaving fans eagerly awaiting further announcements.
