Zero DSR-X: Unleashing the Magic Carpet Ride

Home > Industry Analysis > Content

【Summary】The Zero DSR-X is an electric adventure motorcycle with a short battery life and limited charging capabilities. While it offers a smooth and exhilarating ride, its range is not as advertised, especially at highway speeds. Charging the battery takes a long time, and finding charging stations becomes a part of the adventure. Despite its limitations, the DSR-X can still provide an enjoyable riding experience for those willing to embrace the challenges of electric motorcycles.

Zero DSR-X: Unleashing the Magic Carpet Ride

Highway 142 in Washington offers breathtaking views of dramatic basalt cliffs, the Klickitat River, and Mount Hood. However, my attention is focused on the display of my electric motorcycle, showing 63 miles of range, and Google Maps, indicating 80 miles to the next charger. Can I make it?

The Zero DSR-X, an electric adventure motorcycle, challenges the notion of EVs as "adventure" vehicles. As I borrowed the DSR-X to answer this question, I realized that the better question is: What does adventure mean to you?

Zero is not the only company aiming to take EVs beyond city streets. Rivian offers an electric pickup truck with a camp kitchen, Polaris has an electric side-by-side vehicle for off-roading, and Mercury sells an electric boat motor for exploring. These vehicles are designed for adventure, not just commuting.

The DSR-X has an angular and powerful design that delivers an exhilarating ride. With 100 horsepower and 166 foot-pounds of torque, it accelerates from zero to 60 in 3.6 seconds. The electric motor provides a smooth and vibration-free experience, akin to a magic carpet ride.

However, the DSR-X's range is a concern. While Zero advertises a city range of 180 miles, real-world conditions can significantly affect it. The DSR-X's battery takes about two-and-a-half hours to charge from empty on a level two charger, which is relatively slow compared to other EVs.

Despite the range limitations, I decided to test the DSR-X on a trip to Klickitat County, Washington. I carefully monitored the battery consumption and planned to charge in Hood River, Oregon, halfway to my destination. However, strong headwinds and highway speeds quickly depleted the battery, forcing me to make a decision between conserving energy or reaching the charger sooner.

Arriving in Hood River with a low battery, I plugged into a level two charger and encountered a construction worker curious about the bike. With limited charging options, I continued my journey, carefully managing the battery. The scenic ride along the Klickitat River was a highlight, and I successfully reached a charger with 13% battery remaining.

Adventure on an electric motorcycle takes on a different meaning. The limitations of range and charging add an element of challenge and exploration. On my trip, I interacted with strangers, pushed the bike beyond its estimated range, and discovered new destinations for charging. While it may not be the most convenient option, the DSR-X offers a clean, quiet, and thrilling experience for those seeking a different kind of adventure.
