Toyota Century SUV May Receive Lexus TX's 3.5-Liter Plug-In Hybrid V6

The highly anticipated Toyota Century SUV is set to hit the market with a 3.5-liter PHEV V6 engine, according to a new report from Japan. Originally expected to launch with a four-cylinder engine, this latest development suggests a more powerful option for potential buyers.

Toyota's chief branding officer, Simon Humphries, first announced the Century SUV during a presentation for the new Alphard and Vellfire models back in June. Although attendees were only shown a teaser image of the vehicle, it became apparent that the SUV will share similar dimensions with the Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

Based on Toyota's TNHGA-K architecture, which is also used for the Alphard / Vellfire, Lexus LM, Toyota Highlander, and Lexus TX, the new Century SUV is expected to be a departure from its sedan counterpart. Unfortunately, the V8 engine found in the Century sedan will not be carried over to the SUV. Instead, the SUV will likely feature the same powertrain as the flagship TX 550h+, a 3.5-liter plug-in hybrid V6 engine that produces 406 hp and is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

In addition to its powerful engine, the Century SUV will be sold exclusively with two rows of seats and boast a longer wheelbase than the Lexus TX, providing a more spacious cabin for passengers. This feature, along with its high roof line, is expected to be a major selling point for customers.

Pricing details for the Century SUV have also been revealed. It is estimated that the SUV could start at around ¥15 million (~$105,000), making it more affordable than the Century sedan, which starts at ¥20 million (~$140,000). With its anticipated unveiling before the end of the year, the Century SUV is expected to be available in various markets outside of Japan.
