Toyota Land Cruiser gets new power options

Toyota has introduced an updated version of its popular Land Cruiser off-roader. The new model boasts a stronger chassis, a new eight-speed automatic transmission, and the option for a hybrid powertrain. In terms of aesthetics, Toyota has moved away from the previous generation's awkward and angular design, opting for sleek retro panelling inspired by their iconic models from the 1980s and 1990s.

Despite the changes, the basic formula of the Land Cruiser remains the same. The body still sits on a traditional ladder frame, albeit one that is now 50% stiffer and offers a towing capacity of 3.5 tons. The engine and transmission drive solid-beam axles, maintaining the vehicle's ruggedness.

The updated Land Cruiser utilizes the same GA-F platform as the full-size 300-series Land Cruiser, although this particular model is not available for purchase in the UK or western Europe.

Currently, the Land Cruiser is powered by a 2.8-liter diesel engine that produces 201 horsepower and 500Nm of torque. In 2025, Toyota plans to offer a 48V mild hybrid system as an option, which is expected to improve fuel economy in low-speed and stop-start driving conditions.

Both versions of the Land Cruiser will be equipped with a new eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission, which promises smoother gear changes compared to the previous six-speeder. It is unclear at this time if a manual transmission option will be available.

Toyota has also enhanced the Land Cruiser's off-road capabilities. The vehicle now features shorter overhangs, bodywork designed to provide a better view of the terrain, and a disconnecting front anti-roll bar. This bar can be operated using a switch on the dashboard, improving ride quality and handling on rough terrain.

Other notable changes include a switch from hydraulic to electric power steering, reducing kickback and improving maneuverability at all speeds. Additionally, the body panels have been developed to allow for easy repair or replacement, particularly the front bumper, which is divided into several sections.

Inside the Land Cruiser, buyers can expect a rugged interior with a central screen and chunky buttons that can be operated with gloved fingers. The vehicle will be available in both five- and seven-seat configurations.

Pre-sales for the updated Land Cruiser will begin later this year, with deliveries expected to commence in the first half of 2024. Toyota will also offer a limited First Edition model, limited to approximately 3,000 units for Europe. This special edition will feature classic round headlights and will be available in sand or smoky blue paintwork.
