Toyota Land Cruiser gets updated with diesel and hybrid options

Toyota has introduced an updated version of the Land Cruiser off-roader, featuring various enhancements. The new model boasts a stronger chassis, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the option of a hybrid powertrain. In terms of aesthetics, Toyota has opted for sleek retro panelling inspired by its iconic 60- and 80-series models from the 1980s and 1990s, abandoning the previous generation's gawky tinwork.

Despite the design changes, the Land Cruiser's fundamental formula remains unchanged. The body still sits on a traditional ladder frame, albeit one that is 50% stiffer and offers a towing capacity of 3.5 tons. The engine and transmission drive solid-beam axles, maintaining the vehicle's robustness. The Land Cruiser utilizes the same GA-F platform as the full-size 300-series model, although the latter is not available for purchase in the UK or western Europe.

Currently, the Land Cruiser is powered by a 2.8-liter diesel engine that produces 201 horsepower and 500Nm of torque. In 2025, Toyota plans to offer a 48V mild hybrid system as an option, aimed at improving fuel economy during low-speed and stop-start driving scenarios. Both engine variants will be paired with an eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission, which promises smoother shifting compared to the previous six-speed option. Whether a manual transmission will be available remains uncertain.

Toyota has also enhanced the off-road capabilities of the Land Cruiser. The vehicle now features shorter overhangs, bodywork designed to provide better visibility of the terrain, and a disconnecting front anti-roll bar. The anti-roll bar can be operated through a switch on the dashboard, resulting in a higher-quality ride and improved handling on rough terrains. Additionally, the Land Cruiser has transitioned from hydraulic to electric power steering, reducing kickback and enhancing maneuverability at all speeds.

In terms of durability, the Land Cruiser's body panels have been developed to allow for easy repair or replacement, particularly the front bumper, which is divided into several sections. Inside, buyers can expect a rugged interior equipped with a central screen and chunky buttons that can be operated with gloved fingers. The vehicle will be available in both five- and seven-seat configurations.

Pre-sales for the updated Land Cruiser are set to begin later this year, with deliveries expected to commence in the first half of 2024. Toyota will also release a limited First Edition model exclusively for Europe, featuring classic round headlights and available in sand or smoky blue paintwork. Only approximately 3,000 units of the First Edition will be produced.
