Volkswagen experiences surge in electric vehicle sales

Volkswagen Group, which includes Audi, Skoda, and Porsche, has achieved a significant milestone by delivering over half a million electric vehicles in the first nine months of 2023. This surge in sales reflects the growing trend of people switching from fossil fuel cars to electric ones. The German company is committed to achieving a net carbon-neutral balance by 2050.

Out of the total deliveries, electric vehicles accounted for 7.9% of Volkswagen's overall deliveries, up from 6.1% in 2022. Market analysis reveals that Europe remains the key growth driver, with a 61% increase in electric vehicle deliveries, reaching 341,100 vehicles. In America, electric vehicle deliveries grew by 74% to 50,300 units.

Volkswagen led the way with 273,000 electric vehicles delivered by the end of September, followed by Audi with 123,000 EVs and Skoda with 54,400 battery-powered models. Porsche had a five percent share with 27,900 electric vehicles delivered, while Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles held a four percent share with 19,600 EVs delivered.

Hildegard Wortmann, a member of Volkswagen Group's extended executive committee for sales, expressed satisfaction with the performance of their all-electric deliveries, which saw a global increase of 45% in the first nine months. Despite some reluctance in the European market to buy battery-powered vehicles, Volkswagen managed to gain market share and maintain its position as the market leader in this segment. However, the company's order intake fell short of their ambitious targets due to the lower-than-expected overall market trend.

The Volkswagen ID.4 emerged as the most popular model from the entire Volkswagen Group portfolio, with 162,100 vehicles sold. It was followed by the ID.3, which saw 90,500 deliveries. Audi's Q4 e-tron, including Sportback models, secured the third position with 77,900 examples delivered.
