Volkswagen sees surge in electric vehicle sales

Volkswagen Group, which includes Audi, Skoda, and Porsche, has achieved a significant milestone by delivering over half a million electric vehicles in the first nine months of 2023. This surge in electric vehicle sales is driven by the increasing number of people opting for eco-friendly transportation options and moving away from fossil fuel cars. Volkswagen Group is committed to achieving a net carbon-neutral balance by 2050.

During the nine-month period ending on September 30, electric vehicles accounted for 7.9% of Volkswagen's total deliveries, up from 6.1% in 2022. Market analysis reveals that Europe remains the key growth driver, with a 61% increase in electric vehicle deliveries to 341,100 units. In America, electric vehicle deliveries grew by 74% to 50,300 units.

Volkswagen was the leading brand in electric vehicle deliveries, with 273,000 units delivered by the end of September. Audi followed with 123,000 electric vehicles, and Skoda delivered 54,400 battery-powered models. Porsche contributed 27,900 electric vehicles, accounting for a 5% share, while Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles held a 4% share with 19,600 EVs delivered.

Hildegard Wortmann, a member of Volkswagen Group's extended executive committee for sales, expressed satisfaction with the overall performance of their electric deliveries, which saw a global increase of 45% in the first nine months. Despite some reluctance in the European market to purchase battery-powered vehicles, Volkswagen Group managed to gain market share and maintain its position as the market leader in this segment. However, the company's order intake fell short of their ambitious targets due to the lower-than-expected overall market trend.

Among the various models offered by Volkswagen Group, the Volkswagen ID.4 emerged as the most popular, with 162,100 vehicles sold. The ID.3 followed closely behind with 90,500 deliveries, and Audi's Q4 e-tron, including Sportback models, secured the third position with 77,900 examples delivered.
